Version 1.4.1 has three tabs – Stories, My Words and AI – and a profile (the round button at the top left) with all settings. Earlier versions had separate Books and Settings tabs; the answers below mention both where they differ.

Getting started

I'm completely new to the language. Where do I start?

Choose I'm completely new when the app asks how well you know the language, or open First Steps at the top of Stories. First Steps is ten very short connected stories per language. Before each story you learn its new words with audio, you can show a translation under any sentence, and the recording plays at a calmer pace. Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Russian can show pronunciation above the words. When you finish the tenth story the app suggests moving on to A1.

Which languages are supported?

Storylang offers stories in 16 study languages – English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Dutch, Danish, Polish, Turkish, Indonesian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean – from First Steps and A1 to C2. You choose the language you speak and the language you are learning (profile → My languages). The app itself is available in English, Swedish, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German and Italian.

Reading and vocabulary

How do I translate and save a word?

Press and hold a word while reading. Its translation appears in your native language and the word is saved in My Words, where you practise it with spaced repetition. To translate a whole sentence, use Translate sentence in the word card, or turn on sentence translations in the reader's Aa menu.

Can I turn pages instead of scrolling?

Yes. Choose Turn pages or Scroll vertically as the Reading mode under profile → Settings. The choice applies to stories and your own books.

Where do I find stories and my own books?

Open Stories: First Steps, stories at your level, your own AI stories and My books – your imported files and any books you downloaded from the old catalog in earlier versions. In earlier versions, imported files were under Books.

Can I read my own books?

In Stories → My books, tap Import file (earlier versions: Books). Supported formats include EPUB, PDF, Kindle files without DRM (MOBI, AZW, AZW3), Word (DOCX), ODT, RTF, FB2, HTML, Markdown, plain text, subtitles (SRT, VTT) and ZIP archives. Reading your own files is free. Listening to imported files requires active Plus, including replaying saved audio. If the app guesses a book's language wrongly, change it on the book's page.

How do I delete a saved word?

Tap the trash button on the word in My Words, or swipe it. Undo appears for a few seconds if you change your mind.

Can I listen while doing something else?

Yes. Listen on Stories plays the recorded stories at your language and level one after another, with a sleep timer. Recorded stories don't use your audio hours. You can control playback from the Lock Screen, Control Center and AirPods.

How does the streak work?

A day counts when you read or listen for at least a minute, review a word, or finish a story. You earn a streak freeze for every seven days in a row (up to two), which covers a missed day automatically. Tap the flame at the top right to see your progress. Reminders skip days you've already done and pause after a week without activity.

Is there a widget?

Yes, on iOS: touch and hold the Home Screen or Lock Screen, tap Edit → Add Widget and search for Storylang. The steps are also under profile → Help. The widget shows your streak, today's goal and words to review.

What works offline?

Included stories, bundled recordings and content already on your device work offline. New translations, AI answers and newly generated speech need an internet connection.

Audio and purchases

Reading and word practice are free. During the launch, AI stories, translations and the AI coach are free for everyone as well. Technical rate limits still apply.

Local prices and renewal terms appear before purchase.

How do I restore, redeem or cancel?

Use Restore purchases on the Storylang Plus page (profile → Storylang Plus). If you have an App Store offer code for Storylang, redeem it under profile → Help → Redeem code. Manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple Account's subscription settings. Deleting Storylang or its optional backup account does not cancel an App Store subscription.

AI, privacy and account backup

Why is an AI feature not responding?

Check your internet connection and your AI permission in profile → Settings → Privacy (earlier versions: Settings → Privacy). Text you write yourself is sent through our server to Anthropic only after you allow it. If a request still fails, wait briefly and try again, then email support with the error shown. Do not include passwords or private keys.

Do I need an account?

No. Sign in with Apple is optional and is used for word backup. If enabled, saved words and their practice progress are stored on our server so you can restore them on another device. Your books and stories are not part of that backup.

How do I delete my backup or local data?

Open profile → Account and word backup → Delete account (earlier versions: Settings → Account → Back up your words → Delete account) and follow the confirmation steps. This signs out your devices and deletes the server backup; it does not delete words already stored on your device. Deleting the app does not delete an existing server backup.

Does Storylang use analytics or advertising measurement?

Storylang shows no ads inside the app. Optional anonymous usage statistics can be turned off in the app's privacy settings. On iOS, TikTok app-event measurement runs only if you allow tracking when iOS asks; change that in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. AI features use Anthropic, generated speech uses ElevenLabs, and our backend is hosted by Cloudflare.

See the current privacy policy for the full data, retention and deletion details.
